Once the discussed towers are measured, it would be interesting to know
what the conclusions are.
The eye is easily fooled with regards to verticality. Even the Romans
knew this. The columns to their buildings were tapered to be more
narrow at the top to appear vertical and parallel. Otherwise the eye
would tell one they are tilting in towards one another.

That is how I did it as well..I set up two ladders with a wooden arm
clamped to each. I hung a plumbob from the end of the arm.....the plumb
bob was a wrench in a bucket of water to damp out any oscillations.
Choose a still day. I lay on the ground and supported my head with my
arm. By rolling my eyes from the bottom to the top of the tower, I was
able to judge the plumb to within half the thickness of the tower
vertical members.
