Years ago Ed K4SB (then K4DJC) wrote an article for 73 about just what you 
are asking about.  He wanted to get his 80 meter Inverted V higher and he 
used a mast (20 feet or so) above the beam.  He used a universal joint the 
top of the extension.  The mast rotated but the joint stayed still so the 
dipole did not move.

I wish I could relay more info but a reference was in the early ON4UN Low 
Band Books.  Ed said the main concern is that the beam stayed well within 
the legs of the inverted V.  More info if I can find it.
