Dennis,
I use a worm gear hand operated winch on my TX472. What I did was
remove the handle and, in place of the handle and nut, replace it with a
"long" nut. I think they call them "coupler" nuts. I used red loctite
on that nut to be sure it wouldn't unscrew when I'm running it backwards
(down). If I ever do need to remove the nut I can simply heat it up
with a torch.
I bought a long socket that fit the nut. Then, I took a 4" 3/8 ratchet
extension and machined the female end off. Machined (actually had a
friend with a mill do it) three flats on that end. It worked fine but
wobbled a bit so I brazed the socket onto the extension. Be sure to
keep the socket straight on the extension when you braze it. I used a
lathe; held the extension with the lathe "head" and centered the socket
with a pointed tool in the endstock.
The drill is a Milwaukee Hole Hawg drill set on the 300 RPM speed. I'd
already tried a 3/8" Makita and a 1/2" Milwaukee but they would heat up
and slow down after the tower raised up a few feet. The Hole Hawg has
enormous torque and does the job without any complaints at all...
