Ed, I am not sure if your buddy was interested in building a 2 element 80 meter 
beam.  If he is he might look at my web site

I  am in the process of building a 80meter 2 element beam that will cover the 
complete 80 meter band with an SWR of less than 1.5:1

Just in case there are any builders out there.
