Patrick:
In the mid-1960s they developed the master plan for 35,000+ acres of
land for between Dallas and Fort Worth for D-FW International Airport
when there was nothing but farmland and weeds out there. Now folks are
moving into new developments north of the airport 40+ years later and
complaining about the noise. Guess they listened more to the Realtors
and land salespersons than using their eyes to check the skies.
Fortuneately my XYL Cheryl (WY5H) and I live about 15 miles west of the
main runways. When they're using the crosswind runways we occasionally
will have a plane come over, but its usually still too high in altitude
to make any kind of noticeable noise.
Of course that's probably not as bad as Lindberg Field is in San Diego.
I used to have a great uncle who lived there before he died in the
mid-1970s who had a home on the side of a hill on one end of Lindberg's
main landing runway pattern. On one end of the runway is this hill and
when planes are landing they have to follow the contour of this huge
hill at no more than 200 feet off the ground on their descent. When
those 707s (yes it was back in the 1970s when 707s still flew) DC9s, and
727s would come over his house you could look up and almost count the
rivets on the wings and fuselage. You could look out the door of his
home and see the entire length of the runway. Nice view I guess, but
noisy.
When my XYL and I would visit my great uncle and aunt and a plane would
come over we just had to stop talking because you couldn't hear anything
over the engine roar.
