The best idea I've read here so far is alodining the wire, a chemical
conversion process.
The next step would be to figure out how to apply a protective primer in a
way that was
efficient and did not require much labor. Perhaps wiping a primer like XIM
400 with a
spong is a possibility.
I've used 17 guage electric fence wire but in two years it gets very brittle.
