On this I must disagree,
You do not need a ton of land and huge antennas to be serious about
Ham Radio.
About contesting, being a big Gun hard core contester, maybe.
To be serious about Ham Radio you can get by with a simple vertical,
or even just a 'screwdriver' type antenna
Serious is a very loose term in my opinion, serious about what has
more bearing on what you can and cannot do, and
Where and where not to build what you will need
For me, a GAP Titan DX, a YA-30 Yaesu Folded Dipole are all I need
right now to be serious
About Ham Radio, I hear decent and can normally work anyone I hear on
either antenna.
The only thing I will agree completely on is that if you sign in to
an area with anal retentive CC&R or HOA's
It's your own fault you cannot put up antennas, or if you can you
must hide them very well.

To avoid tower restrictions, simply do not purchase a house in a
subdivision with CC&Rs (covenants, codes, and restrictions) and a HOA
(Homeowner's Association). If you do you have no one but yourself to
blame.
If you want to get serious about ham radio, you need to buy acreage
away from highly developed areas and build a house and an antenna
farm.
