I am looking for a good source for RG-6 for an upcoming
RX antenna project. I need quick turnaround (stocking
supplier) and a good price (I need 1000 feet). My preference
would be single shield (95% copper braid) as the diameter of
this stuff is small enough that my .250" I.D. type 31 ferrite
beads (I have a whole box of them) will slip right over the
outside of this stuff (the multi-shield stuff is too big), but
I am thinking that the copper shield stuff is probably more
expensive than the multi-shield aluminum braid over foil
style stuff (I can put the #31 beads on short RG-59 pigtails
if it turns the multi-shield stuff is significantly cheaper). Any
idea what a good quantity price is for each type of RG-6?
::Single shielded, copper-braid RG6/U is about as scarce as Unicorn dung
around here. I'd probably have to special-order it, to find any. But the
quad-shield CATV stuff is so available, it's essentially free. And usually
it is free. Any time I spot a cable installer truck pulled over anywhere,
if I ask him for some cable, he'll generally give me as much as I want,
especially if I indentify myself as their customer (which I am). 1000'
isn't much -- considering the installer trucks carry 30,000 feet or so on
that big spool. I think mil-spec RG59A/U, if you need single-shielded, more
flexible, smaller-diameter 75 Ohm line, is probably a lot more available.
*That* I can find on 1000, 2500 and 5000' spools, mil surplus, at the local
electronic surplus outlet for about $.10/foot. -WB2WIK/6
