KC8TES: I, too, am not an expert on lightning or lightning protection.
However, I fail to see how grounding or not grounding has anything to do
with "receive signals and QRP transmit."  If you're using end-fed wires and
ground-mounted verticals, sure -- a good reference, be it a real earth
ground or an image plane, helps a lot.

Personally, I have no ground system of any kind, and cannot remember the
last time I had one of any kind.  In 37 years of hamming from 14 houses, I
don't think I've ever had a ground system.  I use current-driven antennas
like beams on towers, and with or without any kind of ground, they work
exactly the same.  My towers have always been planted in large blocks of
concrete going down 6' or so underground, and full of re-bar, and that's my
outside "ground."  My inside ground is the green (third) wire in all my
power cords...
