The friendly feller I talked to was William O'Keefe. A rather long
correspondence over several days, asking technical points about
grounding and lightning protection. In answering me about why they
preferred solid over stranded wire to run between tower and house (I
thought stranded would be better, because of skin effect), he said, and
I quote:

>Richard,
>Good questions.
>We like to specify the solid because it does not allow water to
>permeate its skin and deteriorate within. The copper wire is to be bare
and
>beneath grade. These 2 things work against the copper. If we allow
water to
>penetrate into the wires they have corrode faster and fail. The
connection
>to the perimeter ground is vital to the performance of the ground
system and
>we cannot have it jeopardized.
>
>Long live HAMS!!! Our company was built on the back of hams. We are
>glad to lend a hand, or ham, whenever needed.

>Best regards,
