Mike, of course you can do it by using coax with the outer
shield
removed. However, you remove the outer shield completely! Make
yourself
a small aluminum L bracket and mount an SO 239 in it and then
attach
that to the boom. Take your shieldless coax and insert that
into the
gamma rod. ( solder one end to the center pin of the 239 of
course.
Then, just vary the amount of oneax ( really like that )
inside the
rod, and adjust the shorting bar between the element and the
gamma rod,
and you're home free.
Now, the method I prefer. Get some 1/4" aluminum rod, some
clear plastic
tubing which will allow a tight fit when the rod is inserted
into the
center, and then insert the tubing into the gamma rod. Same
bit with
the SO-239. The 239 will aid in sealing the feed coax so you
don't
allow contamination.
Cheap and easy.
