The Prime Directive when it comes to tower or antenna construction is
to "do what the manufacturer says". If a tower was designed to be erected
with no guy wires, then you shouldn't add any.
That said, I will admit that I have guyed Rohn BX tower before. With
low guy tension, it was kind of a "belt and suspenders" approach. So I guess
I'll qualify my position by saying that if you do something that is logical
and conservative, it might not hurt. On the other hand, it may be more
psychological than real help. Just err on the side where, if something
happens, it doesn't hurt you.
In the case of crankups, if at all only the bottom section should be
guyed (unless specified by the factory). The problem is that addition force
from the guy wire tension will have to be supported by the crankup cables
that are assuredly not designed for the additional pressure.
