Living next to a former cow pasture the Beverage field is loaded with
ticks as they came from Africa with the drought resistance Senepol
Cattle which are a hybrid between the huge English Red-Pol and the Zebu
from West Africa. The tick they brought along are Bont ticks. The nice
part of nature is that large snowy egrets use to land on the cattle's
back and feast on the blood filled ticks. The cattle are gone but the
egrets are still here. The main ticks here are American Red Ticks and
American black ticks. None are known carriers of Lyme disease. I have
5 nice dogs and it is an endless process dipping and cleaning them after
a short trip into the yard. Both my wife and I get frequent tick bites
as a result that we will not part with our family.

There are several natural predators of ticks and having chickens and
guinea hens in the yard will do wonders, plus they will wake you up for
the ZL/VK opennings just before dawn.

One thing we have learn is that if you find a tick engorged with blood
never step on it or squeeze it as this produces up to 1000 eggs from new
ones. Apart from the chemicals mentioned before a good way to pick them
up in any size is by masking tape. for some strange reason ticks are
never found in the ham shack even though my dogs visit her often. I
don't know what could be the reason for that but something keeps them away.

Maybe I am on to something....oh well.
