Operating SOLP, I did not have the benefit of packet spotting or the muscle
to hold a frequency forever...it was only a matter of time before a "big
guy" dropped onto the frequency and started calling CQ, forcing me to move
on or suffer. At first, I was a little upset-after all, the DX could hear
me(I worked several DX who called me while holding a frequency) so I assume
these "big guys" could hear me too...after all, these were 9s, 8s,2s and 3s.
Just cases of "contest fever" I guess!
This forced me during "prime time" into S&P mode and, like AA1K, I found the
DX was there, fully copyable underneath or between the "soldiers" on the
Atlantic wall. With a 150hz or narrower bandwidth filter, I roamed the band
working not only the needed domestic mults but also scads of DX, many well
above 1850. I actually enjoyed hearing the "soldiers" calling me while I
was working the DX-really neat!
Increased activity has caused me to change the way I operate in this
contest, and perhaps others will arrive at a similar conclusion.
