Quoting Jim Jarvis <jimjarvis@verizon.net>:
split operation for international QSO's

G'day
To offer a slightly different view from Herb, KV4FZ - although if I lived
where Herb does geographically, I would do the same as him.
In VK6 - geographically very distant from the major 160m operating centres
of Europe and North America - I rarely use split frequency operation - and
so do other VK6.
The reason for this is that our signals are usually weak and easily
missed/accidentally trodden on by stations in the major operating
centres. The pile-up on my frequency at least serves to alert stations
that there is a DX station underneath it - and so I don't get trodden
on/eaten by alligators. When I try and work split frequency, it is only a
matter of minutes before I get trodden on/eaten.
In contrast, Herb is loud in both Europe and North America and thus
impossible to accidentally tread on.
If I was rare DX rather than common DX (which I am), then I would
definitely work split, as the angry pileup would quickly tread on anyone
who trod on me...
