OK, I'm frustrated and crying "uncle".
I have a beverage (maybe not) that I put up and it does not seem to work
very well. This is really the first time I have had any space to go with
something other than loops and EWE's. At my last qth, loops and EWEs
worked OK but I wanted to take advantage of the new found space. Here is
the layout, give me some pointers on how I can improve it.
500 ft long, #14 insulated/stranded wire, 8 feet up, hanging from trees
with stand-offs. (Deer are plentiful) Aiming about 60 degrees from my PA
qth. It is fed with about 100 feet of RG6, the transformer is a
binocular core that checks out on the analyzer with a range of 1.8 to
over 7 mhz (into a 470 ohm resistor), using W8JI tutorials. One side of
the transformer input is to the center conductor, the other side to the
coax shield. One side of the output of the transformer is to the #14
wire and the other side is to ground (a 4 ft ground rod). On the other
end of the #14 wire is an insulator tied to a tree 8 ft up, no ground,
no terminating resistor. I just wanted to get a starting point and not
terminate the thing to begin with, hoping to maybe hear more signals
than just the EU direction.
The signal to noise is not good. I can hear signals but most DX is
covered with noise. How can I eliminate the noise? Will grounding the
far end help? I did not want to add the resistor, thinking it would
narrow the range too much. I'm at the point where I'm lost. If I change
something I would like to get a result that leads me to the next
improvement, instead I have defaulted to the "uncle" condition.
