If the frequency of a 50-ohm match is high, that means you must go up
with the tap (or wider spacing).

Yes, that is ok to do.  Remember that if the new shunt wire is larger
than the original (10mm) shunt wire, the impedance transformation will be
less.  That means the tap point for 50 ohms will be a bit higher.
