I disagree with this from K6SE:

I'm a real user, not a virtual one and:
I disagree... I have had both a flag and a rotatable diamond antenna...with
about 50 ft of RG-58 lead in. I used the preamp in my IC-756 and/or noise
preamp in the ANC-4. Did not need the ANC-4 preamp, but it helped to phase
out additional local noise with a second antenna.
I have not been disappointed without any pre-amp but the 756's. I have
taken down the diamond, because after several months the no. 26 wire in the
balun broke at the connection to the wire, and have taken it down for repairs.
Have two magnetic loops up at present... and usually have them set up one
into the noise and one into the antenna input of the ANC-4. The diamond was
louder.
