Isn't your beverage coupled to some vertical radiator (i.e. a tower) in the
nearby ?
Isn't it that the matching transformer is an autotransformer (or defective)
and coaxial acts like a snake antenna normal to the beverage direction ?
Have you tried to scrap radials and to use ground rod instead ?
Are you sure about the direction of the reference AM station ?
Are you sure what you catch is really a ground wave and a vertically
polarized wave ?
(When the path includes hills and valleys the ground wave is strongly
attenuated and other propagation modes deliver more signal)
