Several items that appear in demand for the topbander are available for
reasonable prices from Edmund Scientific's:
The have a "Super Slinky" that is an "extra long version extending to
over 10 meters" for $8.95, 16 foot weather balloons capable of lifting
2.5 lbs ($72.95) and an 8 foot version that can lift a little more than
a half a pound when filed with helium for ($18.95).
A substitute item which may be better for coastal or hilltop stations
are their Parafoil kites capable of good elevation and stability with
only 4 mph winds. With magnet wire of the appropriate size a 180 foot
vertical (3/8 wave) would be within the grasp of many. (Stranded wire
of at least 80 lb. test would be better for the larger versions
especially if Earl (K6SE) of Jack (KH6CC) decide to tow one while
operating mobile across the Mojave during one of the contests. Just a
thought.
