Topband: Beverage Ground

When using the Beverage quarterwave ground termination method following the 
resistor, is it mandatory this segment continue in line with the Beverage 
itself, or may the quarterwave be 'zig zag' to fit within available space?

Has anyone done actual subjective Beta testing?
