Tom, I can assure you that the setup was far from dead. I used it during the
60's on top band with super results from W0VXO in Minneapolis. (Not the best DX
location in the world!) I even got to listen to my signal while in Brazil with
a guest op working the radio.
I should have mentioned that the coax cable taped to the outside of the tower
may have provided some discontinuity, but I can't imagine that's why it
performed so well.. Your analogy of the large coax makes sense.
