All of my Beverages are about 15-20 dB below the signal level of 
my verticals. Some DX signals are strong enough at times to 
exceed S-9 with no preamplifiers.

Most people use receiver preamplifiers on Beverages, I use 12 dB 
gain high dynamic range high intercept amplifiers with CATV 
transistors (2N5109's or LT1001's in push-pull). Noise figure is 
unimportant, as long it is better than several dB but intercept is 
critical to prevent IMD in a broadband system.
