I think the problem is both poor propagation and the times
of day for optimum propagation to USA. We can't do anything about
the first, but if anyone can QSP to Hermann, the optimum times for
USA propagation is either at USA sunset (beginning at 2200 for stations
in the extreme Northeast USA but lasting until 0000 for Midwest stations)
or around FH sunrise (about 0230 now). The problem is that these times are
somewhat mututally exclusive on the same day unless Hermann does not need
any sleep! Maybe after he works everyone in Europe, he can try going to
bed early, getting up around 2200 and staying on until his sunrise.
In my experience, propagation to this area often seems to be
the best at our sunset (based on hearing S79MX and VQ9SS many times)
although FR5DX sometimes comes through very well at his sunrise. Hopefully
conditions will improve, and Hermann will discover the best time for
conditions to the USA. He should be there another 9 days so let's not
be too critical yet!
