Eric N7CL has a point. It all depends on how much or how little
background noise there is. I use a 2 turn loop about 1 metre on a side,
with a push pull cathode follower, and get more than enough noise - it's
better than the vertical, but still not good enough! In the end, I guess
it comes down to the ratio of field strength of signal to field strength
of noise - and in my case the latterv seems to be the problem so far.
Of course, for a small loop, a cascode with triodes could get sub 3dB.
I'm going to have to try a EWE. The double horizontal loop in QST the
other year proved totally useless for me.
