Update from Warren, K7WX: November 20, 1996 Yangon, MYANMAR

Yesterday was the first day of operation with all antennas in place.
Propagation to North America has had a few pleasant surprises.

Zone 5: Last evening there was an exciting opening short path 20 meter as
the sunrise terminator passed through this region. This is the first such
opening we have seen. There was also a brief 20 meter sunset opening,
lasting less than 30 minutes. 30, 40 and 80 meters have continued to show
brief sunrise and sunset terminator openings with only modest numbers of
stations being worked. We will continue to emphasize our efforts to this
modest difficult area.

Zones 4 and 3: Good signals on many bands. Operators in these areas should
have little trouble. As expected, the midwest will have more difficulty
than the west coast. Solid openings on 80 and 40 meters. On 80 meters, no
other signal is even close to that of W6RJ who was able to call through
European and JA stations with no difficulty. On 40 meters SSB, VE7DX was
the dominant signal.

Zone 11: Quite variable. Both SP and LP on several bands. PY stations have
appeared unexpectedly in the middle of openings to Europe and JA.

Zone 14 and 15: Huge signals on most bands. On 160 meters, we have worked
every prefix of the UK. LA, SM and OH signals often dominate. We have been
able to work Europe on 80 meter CW through 0030Z.

Zones 16 through 19, 22, 25, 29 and 30: Available 24 hours a day

160 Meters: Most of Europe, although signals have been very weak. This
problem is compounded by the fact that there is a local S9 carrier that
intermittently covers the whole band. We have been using 1.8255 as our
transmit frequency. Nothing to North America as of yet, but we will
continue to try for the sunset terminator path every day. will shift our
emphasis from Europe to JA this evening. Unusual stations worked so far
have been: OY2H, 9K2MU, ZS4TX and VQ9SS.

Update from Warren, K7WX: November 19, 1996 Yangon, MYANMAR

As of today, the four stations and eight Force-12 antennas for the XZ1N
operation have all been constructed with the capability to run four bands
at the same time.

With the recent XY1U operation concentrating on Europe and Japan, as
promised this operation will make a special effort to work the Americas as
propagation permits. 40 and 30 meters look to be the most reliable, but
there may also be some pleasant surprises on the higher bands. Low band
enthusiasts will be happy to know that at this end of the pileup we will be
using a rotatable dipole at 120 feet for 80 meters and both a sloper at 110
feet and a 53 foot linear loaded vertical with full length radials for 160
meters. There will also be receiving loop antennas. Success will now be
determined mainly by propagation.

Initial tests have shown that local sunrise at zone 5 and local sunset at
zones 3 and 4 offer the best propagation to us on 80 through 30 meters.
Even with a Force-12 monoband yagis for both 30 and 40 meters, the east
coast of the USA is very difficult with those signals we can copy being
barely audible above the noise. As expected, the west coast of North
America has been much better with some very strong signals. Our hope is
that propagation overall improves as we head towards the CQ WW CW contest.
So far, the big signals on 80 meters from North America have been W6RJ,
KC7LU, K6UA, and WA6F. Further east, VE3EJ and W9ZR have been easy to copy.

As expected, Europe has been very strong to zone 26 on almost all bands,
including 160 meters with 200 QSOs worked last night on top band from zones
14 and 15. on 40 meters, OE6MBG had one of the very best signals we have
heard so far. In general, we have found stations from OH and SM also to be
quite loud.

Frequent updates to follow.
