It is not a difficult job, it is mostly about dismantling, cleaning,
lubricating, and assembling back. Parts are small, some are fragile,
and go in a certain order.
The day I cannot longer do it I think I'll use WD40 and carefully lube
all moving parts, wiping the excess oil with toilet paper. Doing it in
a hot day will ease things, of course.
Something I have done with my PTOs is to pack more washers in the
back, to ease the pressure that the back spring makes in the whole
assembly. So while I make the radios more prone to minor de-tuning due
to shock and vibration, the tuning knob can be spun around with just
the small finger (I don't plan to rattle those radios in the car and
all have external speakers).
Gents... With very few exceptions there is no need for a rebuild. The
alcohol and Tri-Flo bicycle grease
application takes care of that situation and it does not return. This is
a simple process posted
about 20 years ago and is still listed in archived TenTec posts and
others. Check Google.

So I have an Omni D. Lately, the VFO knob has been getting much stiffer. It
will sort of freeze wherever you leave it overnight... the next day, it will
be very hard cranking and it seems like you have to crank it many, many more
revolutions just to get it to move freq at all. If I crank it up and down
the entire bandwidth, it will be servicable for the day, but next day back
to the same thing.
So am I looking at a rebuild here? Or maybe just a re-lube?
I have not attempted to open the VFO before this... and sort of dreading it
now.
