The 560pf cap is back in and the display is back to normal!! Indeed, the scan
pin on the MK50398N has a function of timing the updates to the display (I
think).
Sigh, but the 1khz tone is back just as loud as it was before. I'm trying to
follow this
1khz tone with my scope. Hopefully I'll find the culprit.
