I use several Argonaut VI radios with a variety of VHF transverters, and
find them to be an outstanding radio. Thanks to the US Army I am almost
totally deaf in my left ear, and only marginal in my right ear, so I
probably could not hear these artifacts in the first place. I do use
headphones with the Argo VI rigs now and then for very weak signals, and
have not had any problems like this.

IMO, when it comes to comparing two radios with each other, there's no such

What I deem to be unfair is to set up a radio in a state that no one would ever
use it in, search for weaknesses, find them and then imply that it makes this
radio worse than that radio. It is totally irrelevant how it behaves in some
state which we would never use it in.
We bought the radio to listen to other stations, not to search for weaknesses
in unrealistic situations.
I want to now how well the radio receives compared to other radios under two
situations:
1) weak station on a very quiet band
2) weak station on a very crowded band
This is testing a radio when doing what it was intended to do.
Most likely, if we had a few more sunspots and the bands were open, we wouldn't
even be discussing this silly topic!

Carlos, I don't hear the hiss on my Argonaut VI unless I put head phones on &
listen very carefully. I'm guessing you have the AF turned all the way down,
counter clockwise? And that depends on what make headphones I use. With Kenwood
HS-5 yes, but with some old Bose over the ear headphones just barely hear the hiss.
As far as the weak pulsing noise from the encoder, yes can hear that if I listen
very carefully, but with antenna connected all that stuff is eliminated with band
noise.
Comparing the Argonaut VI to a Corsair II is not a fair comparison. I never
owned a Corsair II, but I've heard they have one of the quietest receivers ever
built by Ten Tec.
