Rather than a mechanical place on top of the radio for the iPad, why not leave the reusable parts of the Prion design, along with the front panel and display so the radio could operate stand alone, but have a simple Bluetooth link that would allow someone other than the busy folks at Ten Tec (N4PY, for example) to write an app to use the iPad for all of the features (and more) now offered in the N4PY (or equivalent) software.

In the fashion of the Pegasus, a version with no display or perhaps a simple low cost alphanumeric readout could be offered. Then it’s BYE BYE to the obsolescence of displays, encoders and things like that. A new iPad, when needed should the display go bad, is a simple deal at any Apple (or competing) store.

One of the challenges with HF radios is how to maximize features while offering a rational and convenient front panel--there is only so much "real estate" available for displays, meters and controls. What about building a wireless interface into the TenTec Phoenix that links to your iPad or other similar device? The rig could have an 8-inch groove cut into the top of the front panel bezel--simply place your iPad in the groove, fire up the Phoenix app, and you've got all the "eye candy" you could want displayed on the iPad while keeping the front panel of the rig simple enough for normal operations. The app could handle spectrum display, custom metering, real-time decoding, etc; it could even have preset buttons that instantly configure the radio for band, mode, etc. without depending on multi-multi-function buttons on the front panel of the radio.
