One of the challenges with HF radios is how to maximize features while offering
a rational and convenient front panel--there is only so much "real estate"
available for displays, meters and controls.
What about building a wireless interface into the TenTec Phoenix that links to
your iPad or other similar device? The rig could have an 8-inch groove cut into
the top of the front panel bezel--simply place your iPad in the groove, fire up
the Phoenix app, and you've got all the "eye candy" you could want displayed on
the iPad while keeping the front panel of the rig simple enough for normal
operations.
The app could handle spectrum display, custom metering, real-time decoding,
etc; it could even have preset buttons that instantly configure the radio for
band, mode, etc. without depending on multi-multi-function buttons on the front
panel of the radio.
