The Orion 1 had LED illumination, one of the first Ham radios to do so,
I have never needed to open an Orion 2 display but I doubt that Ten Tec would
have stepped backwards this far unless they had a good reason.
Perhaps so, though, since Orion 2’s did not use the white pair of wires going
from the power distribution board, the one that provided power for the LED
control circuit. If the O2 display had on board high voltage generation on the
CPU board (or on the display panel itself), that would obviate the need for
this white cable.
It is possible Ten Tec was not able to find a color LCD that used LED
illuminators. If this was the case, then the LCD panel in use must have its own
on-board high voltage generator because the 566 schematic does not show one and
the LCD PWM driver from the 565 is missing from the 566. Thus it is highly
probable that the color display has its voltage generator on-board.
The person who found and repaired this gave us (myself at least) some very
valuable information and did a great repair!
