Ummm, why are we talking about an Icom radio on the Ten-Tec email list? I don't think I could think of a more insulting insult than to do so.

The overload problem was reported by:

Rob Sherwood in his test of the 7300

Adam Farson in his test of the 7300

ARRL/QST in their test of the 7300

RSGB/RadCom in their test of the 7300

DARC/CQ DL in their test of the 7300

The German Magazine FunkAmateur in their test of the 7300

Several contesters in contest forums

And then an ICOM reply in one of the forums where a user had complained to ICOM that his 7300 didn't hack it but his 7410 with optional roofing filters did....

Here is ICOM's reply (from an eham.net review):
==================================
" Thank you for contacting Icom America.

Unfortunately given the extremely harsh operating environment you are forced to operate in the IC-7410 with the optional roofing filters or one of the higher end rigs will likely be required. You could try a pre-selector with the IC-7300

==================================

ICOM is recommending a preselector if you want to operate the IC-7300 in a contest. The preselector rejects out of band strong signals and helps reduce front end overload.

Hmmmmm, no wonder Jim (and I) have the “opinion” that the 7300 has an overload problem.

It is what it is: Over-hyped by the ham community, not by ICOM.

And Ten-Tec has been trashed by the ham community for one year, which unfortunately has scared many users into bailing out from their good radios.

For contesting, so far there is still nothing under $2K that is better than my Eagle. Most likely there will be something in the next year or two using direct sampling, but it will have knobs and not require a computer.

Interesting observations on the IC-7300. I'd not yet read about the overload issues.

I've never heard the '7300 described as "entry level," but within the context of direct-sampling that dscription makes sense. I had a friend try to convince me that a '7300 would be just as good as my fully-loaded OII (all filters) with a full-loaded RX-366, so I should unload my OII for a '7300. I respectfully declined. Yes: if the OII breaks it will become a bother to maintain. Even so I have become fond of the user interface; as long as it works and does what it's supposed to, it's hard to justify replacing it based on performance alone. Certainly not with a '7300. Well many of us are in similar financial situations Mike, but all of us can read and we should just simply read what the OEM says/prints and stop dreaming.

Direct sampling is a new technology.
This is not an entry level radio, it is an entry level radio into the state-of-the-art direct sampling world.
Simply read what they say and don't add anything to it.

"Entry level" on its own is an IC-718 for $600.

This is a great entry level radio for people wishing to become familiar with this new technology.
It's not a contest radio (yet), and may never be.

People who replace an Eagle or OM7 with this, hoping for better performance are shooting themselves in the foot. People wanting to learn about the future of ham radio will be pleased with the 7300.

As always, it's horses for courses and we must all do our own due diligence.

I have a hard time handling over $1500 for a radio and being told it’s ‘entry level.’ Nothing like scaring the bejesus out of a new ham who after spending all that money for a rig, he/she ends up with ‘entry level’ radio.

Does one really need a $4k/$5k radio to have fun with?

How in the world did you guys survive contesting using the Triton IVs, the TS-520s, the FT-101s, and the HW-101s?
