Note that the discussions on this topic on this reflector have mostly
been about radios that are old enough to be considered ancient by most
manufacturers. YOU may think it's reasonable to maintain a 30 year old
rig, but don't be surprised if it turns out to be expensive. I've
managed to keep my 35 year old Ten Tec Titan amps running by working on
them myself, and they have proven to be VERY dependable amps. But I can
do that because they 1) are very well designed, 2) built with good
components, 3) are well documented, and 4) use only generic discrete
transistors. But I'd probably be SOL if I had to replace band switches!
Think about it -- when you do enough damage to your 10 year old vehicle
in an accident that it costs more than it's market value to repair, the
insurance company is going to pay you that market value, which will be a
pretty small fraction of what you paid for it.
