Barry makes some good points on why to do this. As far as the rush of
band noise between words, that's easily fixed by using slow AGC.
But the biggest problem with the scheme of using high audio gain and low
RF gain is you can still get blasted by a very strong signal as you tune
the band. With normal audio and high RF gain, the radio's AGC will stop
you from being blasted with a strong signal. And you will also find you
rarely need to change the volume this way.
I have an old Collins 75A1 receiver that I still listen to once in a
while. For CW and SSB, it has no AGC system at all. So the way you use
this is to run the audio gain full and use the RF gain as the volume
control. Barry's scheme is a partial use of this old method. It just
to me seems very archaic to go back to a scheme that was used in the
1950's. The AGC in modern radios is wonderful. But don't use fast AGC
and you won't have AGC compression.
