In order to get any significant advantage, I'd say about 10 dB additional gain or power is required. From your 600 watt PEP value this equates to 6 KW PEP. Still interested?

By the math, basically going from 600 watts PEP to the legal limit of 1500 watts PEP then about 4.0 dB of power gain is required. That nets about 3/4 S unit increase.

How about option #3 - build your own amp? :-) My rag chew buddies on 80 meters are pestering me to build my own so they can hear me over the summer static crashes when my measly 600 PEP isn't cutting it.

Along with the transceiver clones, there are amplifier clones.
A clone of the OM-Power amplifiers has been selling down under for about a
year.

Apparently they have opted to test the Australian market first. Closer to
home?
They entered the market for about $2500 but are now selling for close to
$2K.

Array Solutions sells OM-Power amplifiers in the states.
See: http://www.arraysolutions.com/Products/OM_Power/OM_Power.htm

And here's a link to the Chinese amplifiers:
http://www.amp.co.nf/

TWO QUESTIONS for you guys:

1). Would you rather pay $7K for an original OM-Power, made in the Slovak
Republic or $2K for what looks to be the same amplifier, but made in China?

2). Regardless of how you answered #1, what do you think most people will
do?

OK, so some of you answered "neither" and will stick with "made in America".
How much longer?

IMO the cheap clones will cause the good OEMs to switch their business to
something else, or simply close their doors.
Not today and not tomorrow but within 5 years!
