Wade... you need someone to blog about how effective that SWR Spray is,
just to give it greater credibility. You know... if you read it on the
web, it must be true. As it is probably not mentioned on Snopes.com or any
of the other urban legend busting sites, then it must be true, or there
would be a piece refuting it... right?
Lemme know if I can help... I used to make up and sell all sorts of false
claims in a former life ... you know... "He is NOT Guilty, your
Honoriness..." Er...um ... yeah, right.

I actually sold some SWR Spray to a Charlie Baker operator once. Back in
the Dot Matrix Printer days. The printed label was quite convincing. This
was a half can as a gift. The guy came back wanting to purchase a Full
Can.
This was actually Hair Spray relabeled... hi hi ........ I am now going to
try the Antenna Wax thingy on a friend ..... Thanks for the cool idea...!!

Antenna Wax. It's a classic joke out here if not a very good one.
Polished
the antenna today with antenna wax. Maybe it wasn't a joke.

I'm not sure if you asked me or the group.
I have no clue, and I guess there are several types.
One thing I know for sure: NOBODY coats their feedline with a wetting
agent
before it rains.
Another thing I know for sure: how much difference 6dB makes in a
contest.
It's like running barefoot or with a linear.
Running a linear means I work 90% of all the stations I call with just 1
or
2 calls.
Running barefoot means I get about 30% with just one call.
So in a contest, 6dB means a lot more than 6dB measured in a lab.
I guess it is due to the competition.
On an un-crowded band, it would mean 1 S-Unit but in a contest it means
a
lot.
My point: I have run openwire (window line) countless times in contests
where it rained and if I had been losing 6dB all the time, I would have
noticed it in my score. I did not. I only noticed that I had to retune
the
matchbox.
I always use manually tuned matchboxes. If you have an auto-tuner, then
it
really doesn't matter much.

Is the "wetting agent" conductive -- or at least more conductive than
rain
water?
Shoulda whipped out a vintage can of Bullshit Spray.
Then again, when I was in the Navy we sent new guys to the shop on Snipe
hunts for "magnetic bearing grease," "gig line," "fallopian tube" (these
were all young men at the time)', &c. If we were lucky the other shops
would contribute and the various product would endlessly be in the "next
shop."
Sadly, the only BT punch could be delivered by the only Boiler
Technician in Guantanamo Bay on Pier Delta (in "Oil Pollution Control")-
which was a bit out of the way for a joke.
But I digress.
Good times.
