Steve,
Check the requirements of your external reader.
It may be that it is expecting a signal from the "Line Out" of the radio,
which the Argosy does not have (yet).
You may need to tap into an earlier stage of the Argosy's audio, and indeed
run a shielded cable, like RG-174 to the Spare Jack on the back.
Later Ten-Tec radios had this Line Out available on the Accessory Jack(s).

I want to add an additional audio out for my Argosy so I can feed it to an
external keyer/reader. I originally ran a wire from the phone jack to one of
the spare RCA jacks on the back of the unit, but now have an added level of
white noise that is always there even if the AF is turned all the way down.
I'm thinking that that wire needs to be sheilded?
