I can see your side of it, but I think it does relate to performance
because it IS a tuning aid. It helps determine the best RF-Gain
setting to minimize noise, and maximize signal - i.e., what setting
achieves the best S/N - signal-to-noise ratio at a given moment.
Certainly, it is not worthy of becoming an obsession, as you
suggest, of course, but it provides a visual clue, to supplement
audible clues, when trying to zero in the best S/N.
