I hear you, but the 707 worked well under v2 firmware without the need for 
a preamp.  The Orion II's dynamic range was wide enough to handle the gain 
that the 707 requires.  It appears that the dynamic range of the v3 firmware 
is more limited, resulting in distortion.  As you know, the output of the 
707 is -78 dB vs. -52 dB for the 706, which is working OK (give or take an 
issue about speech compression under v3 firmware).
