Mike,

I apologize for not replying to you. The Argosy is back on the air and working fine. Cutting the red lead and running it through my old Tripplett Multi-meter showed at least some of the problem. It looked like the transistors were a bit over driven so I backed off the driving amperage a little, and I seem to get good reports. I also cleaned up the Model 700 mike that came with it and I have been a bit more sensitive to setting the SSB drive level, The reports seem good so far. I am planning on taking it portable. What can be nicer than a sandwich and and a QSO at lunch time. Still working on what antenna to go with. AD5X has a nice portable vertical that can be adjusted for each band so no tuner is needed. That seems to be it for now. Throw a 12 V sealed motorcycle battery in the trunk and I am good to go, as they say. With a little luck, we might just be able to work eacdh other.

73 for now,

John / WA1JG

John,

That's a decoupling cap and it's kind of standard design for solid state
amplifiers. Just break the connection to the red wire feeding +13 v into the PA
and insert an amp meter.

Operate rig into a dummy load.

BE VERY CAREFUL when working on that PA as the transistors are obsolete and TT
does not stock them.

RF parts have a sub but they are not as robust as the original ones.

I have been able to move the back panel out enough to at least see the
final amplifier board. I am trying to figure out a safe way to insert a
ammeter into the power line to the final. Not there yet.

As an aside, it appears that someone has added a 1000 mf electrolytic to
ground across the power line (red) to the final. This does not appear
in the schematic that is in the manual. Was there a problem with early
Argosys that this was meant to cure?
