And 6dB is the same as 4X (times). So the 715 effect is just about the same
as adding a small amplifier like a SB-200 or 30L1. For the past several
years, I have just run the 715 when DXing and Contesting rather than turn
the Titan 425 on. But if a all time new one, (ST0R or my last two - FT8W or
VP8-S) came up then the amp goes on too. Just make sure if you use an
amplifier with a 715, that the amplifier can handle the extra 6 dB average
power increase and associated cooling issues. Likewise the transceiver PA
and cooling system if running near its design peak output during contesting
or other high duty cycle operating.
And finally the 715 will work with any SSB transceiver / transmitter as long
as you can insert it between the station microphone and transceiver /
transmitter connector. Cables and adapters are available from TT and other
manufacturers.

I agree completely. I was trying keep the conversation "hands-on", but yes,
there is a measurable difference. My Agilent scope has a very effective
"mean" function, and the difference between the DSP SP and the 715 is 6 db
with my conservative settings.

Mike, the difference in average talk power is not only "perceived", it is
also real, if you run both technologies to the point of equal distortion.

Richard -
I am not an expert on this topic, but I just went around with this myself
prior to the recent purchase of a 715 Speech Processor. The built-in speech
processor is an "audio" (DSP) processor. The 715 is an RF speech processor,
and (according to the operators I have conversed with) there is a marked
difference in percieved "loudness" and average signal strength indication
between un-processed input, the "audio" processor and the 715 with the RF
being the clear winner for loudness. Audio quality, eh...not so much.
Hope this helps!

Why does TenTec list the 715 Speech Processor as an option for the Omni VII?
I
thought the built-in processor whould be more than sufficient.
