I have never experienced that with my Omni V, but I have run into it in other
equipment. It's usually a capacitor that has gone bad, becoming leaky, changing
the bias on a circuit, and causing it to oscillate. If it affects both transmit
and receive, it's probably somewhere in, or at the input to, the IF stage. It
could also be in the AGC somewhere, since it only occurs when there is a signal
present.

Subject: [TenTec] Noise in Omni V

I have an Omni V that develops an intermittent noise in the radio. I can best
describe it as a high pitch squeal that completely deflects the S meter to the
right and covers up all incoming signals. I can sometimes switch between the
VFO's which stops it, sometimes switching the antenna in and out stops it, many
times I have to turn the radio off and then back on. It has gotten to the point
where it usually comes back after just a few seconds. While in a QSO with a
friend, when I unkeyed the noise was present. I turned it off and then back on.
My friend reported that the noise came through on my signal and wiped it out. I
have tried two different power supplies with no difference. I have also tried
using different antennas, one dipole cut for 40 and the other for 80. The
signal was present on both bands. I took the radio to the factory but they
could not hear the noise. It is only present when the radio is connected to an
antenna and a signal is present so I don't know if th
ey actually hooked it to an antenna or not. Their theory was that the noise is
something here that I am picking, but I have never had the problem with my
Paragon, Scout, or Yaseu 450. I've cleaned all the connectors and cycled the
antenna switch on the back of the rig. Anyone have any suggestions? I love the
radio and would like to put it back into service.
