Sending to TenTec would be a terrible waste, unless you cannot deal with teeny
little tiny parts. Eyesight and coordination are necessary, brain power is not.
It is very easy to figure out with the TT instructions and very satisfying when
you have finished.
In my opinion, the rebuild kits are generally not necessary nor is taking apart
the insides of the PTO. Just open the PTO enclosure, mask the PCB, spray the
front bearings and upper spring with WD40 to dissolve the grease. Then use
fingers to press in some new grease on those two areas and work the mechanism a
bit.
Ultimately, if you need to take the thing down to little pieces, it is not at
all difficult but for example the bearings are the size of BB's, it's small
work.
Great Winter project - easy and fun.
Have the kit to rebuild it, have never done a rebuild before, but
am reasonably mechanically capable. TT tells me the price is $125 to rebuild
it, and then of course the shipping will likely add at least another $50.
They tell me alignment after rebuild is probably not necessary.
So, appreciate advice about rebuilding/having TT rebuild it/ or avoiding the
issue by just selling the rig, Finally, assuming I rebuild, what is the
best solvent to remove the old grease? Is Varsol ok?
