Phil, in contests,
Keyers and memory keyers have been accepted for a long time. It is
pretty easy to learn to send your report to the other station in DXing:
It is always "5NN", and your QTH is easy to send. Most contests have a
number to send, a serial number so how hard is that? One does not need
to average 5 wpm to do those few things. Most contesters have a pre
programmed automatic "CQ TEST", and the report is pre programmed.
They only have to key the station call sign they call/ answer, and thier
own call is likely pre programmed as well.Like that or not, that has
been the reality for decades since the first keyers and memories came out.
There probably are some straight key contests, and there is the straight
key nights sponsored by some CW groups.
