Check the B+ wire going to the amplifier module. There is a history of this
"rivet" and wire connection opening up and needing to be resoldered.
Happened to my VI+ after 5-6 years of use.

Sounds like your output pot is making poor contact, at times, like a
scratchy volume control. A shot of tuner cleaner into the pot, while not
operating, might just cure it. Obtainable from the local electronics store
in the mall.
