Most hams don't have double or triple backup redundancy in everything
either. And since they aren't making money off their licenses, they usually
can't afford to go out and buy a $250,000 tx right after their main got
fried by lightning. yes, it happens, even with all the protection, and the
protection helps to be sure, but not always if the strike is a direct cloud
to tower positive hit.
