Mike,

Contact W3HF or some of the other fine folk who hang out on the AE7Q system
(www.ae7q.com and www.ae7q.net). Many have old callbooks & similar records
going way, way, way back, they may be able to dig up some info for you.

For example, thanks to them, I know that I'm the second W3WN; the previous
holder got the call as a youth back in the very early 30's (there had been
several 3WN's before the "W" prefix became part of the call, but Ed was the
first to actually hold the call in this form).

I also came across an... event on a certain unnamed web site that, thanks to
the help of KQ3DX, enabled me to acquire an original W3WN QSL card from
1932, along with a card from another station noted with Ed as the operator.
Neat! They will soon be on display in the shack along with a 1930's W8XK
QSL card, and a handful of others I have from that time period.

73, ron w3wn (the 2nd)

Speaking of OOTs, the original holder of W2IY was Ed Dugan who was licensed
in 1912....one of the "founding fathers" who was so homored at a 50th
anniversary banquet at the ARRL in 1962 (it was in QST in I think August
1962). I got the call in 1976 and have tried to learn more about Mr.
Dugan's amateur radio career but mostly I have run into dead ends. Anyone
ever tried this before?

Well Paul, I have a soft spot in my heart for the OOTs (old old
timers): my Dad, W5JHJ (original call), was licensed in 1939, two
years after you. He served in the AAF's version of the signal corps
in charge of the slave LORAN transmitter on Padre Is., well before
there were any tourists.

Cheers!
