FM does not have the amplitude response sensitivity that AM suffers. FM is either locked in or not for broadcast clarity, although I hear many marginal FM stations from out of town. AM detection is vulnerable to fades, static crashes, and other things that pump the AVC. Intelligibility testing is done with sets of standard words and phrases done in various bandwidths and with many persons speaking and listening.
