Joe,

I turn the 9420 on by shorting pin 6 (+REG) to pin 3 (PWR-ON) on the 12 pin
connector.

I don't use the 9420 to supply my transceiver.
I wanted the full 100A for my amplifier.

The 4-pin plug's description is a little vague, but I don't think shorting
pins 1 to 2 will turn it on because they seem to be shorted anyway inside
the 9420 (see schematic just to the left of Q2).

If you use the 12-pin connector, it will work for sure!

I want to test my 100 amp 9420 power supply that goes with the Herc II amp
with out the amp connected. If I short pin 1 and 2 on the transceiver
connector, will the power supply come on? What pins would I short to turn it
on using the amps 12 pin cable. Any help would be much appreciated.
